What will the weather be like? What should I bring?
Weather during the hunting season in Northern
Maine can vary quite a bit from day to day. Temperatures may
range from as low as 30 degrees to as high as 70 degrees. Long
underwear, camoflauge clothing, insect repellent, and film for
your camera should be included in your personal gear. Also, bring
along coolers to transport your bear home or to your taxidermist.
What firearms do you recommend? What about bullets?
The use of
the proper firearm is of the utmost importance. To lessen the
possibility of losing wounded or crippled game, we recommend
rifles in the higher calibers. Here are a few to consider: .300,
.308, .30-06, .35 and the 7mm. Bullets should be 180 grains or
heavier, soft pointed, and fast expanding.
What is your success rate?
This depends what you consider success. Many factors influence the success of our hunters, such as the
weather, the moon, and the hunter's own skill. 80 to 90% of
our hunters see bear, with a kill rate of approximately 70%.
Individual attention is given
to help make your trip a successful one.
How large are your bear?
This is also highly variable, although several of our hunters have taken trophy animals. For instance, In 1997,
Jerry S. took the all time state
record for the largest bear taken with a muzzle loader.
